Caps for Deck Railing - Add a Personal Touch!

Now that you’ve finished attaching your deck railing, it's time to crown the posts. Doing so will add that personal touch that lets everyone know you have style. Caps for deck railing come in many forms and can serve different purposes, so you must be careful in your creative decision, ensuring that you have the right cap for you.

You can buy post caps from a variety of suppliers, including your local building supplier and online distributors. Whatever your source, you need to be aware of what’s available.

Wooden post caps are probably the cheapest option when you are considering crowning your post supports. These units can come in many forms ranging from ornate finials to the standard squat pyramid shape. Your choice of materials can range from woods such as cedar and redwood to synthetic products made to match decks crafted from engineered woods.

Possibly the cheapest version of this type of cap is a flat plate that is affixed with either a screw or nail. The other versions may require a predrilled hole in the top of the support post. They will either slide or screw into place.

Aluminum post cap for your deck railingAluminum and copper caps are two of the metal types. Aluminum post caps are usually made from cast aluminum molded into shapes that range from ornate finials to the classic pyramid. This type of cap is usually machined with a recessed base so that it will sit over the support post. You don’t have to go with the standard silver color because aluminum can be either painted in your color of choice or powder-coated to produce colors such as white and green.

Copper caps are made from sheets that are molded around a wooden cap base. These designs are usually pyramid in shape. The copper coverage can either cover the entire cap or act as a ring around the outside edge, leaving the wood exposed at the top. With copper, you have the choice of either allowing it to weather naturally or sealing it with a lacquer to contain its original color.

One other option you may want to consider is a functional deck-railing cap in the form of post cap lights. These units employ a low voltage lighting system with lamps embedded in the caps. You can get these caps in various designs from the classical pyramids to glass ones shaped like lanterns. These caps are 12V units powered by an 110V power source. Because of their draw, you can use one transformer to power up to fifteen units. You can buy post light caps with photo-reactive cells and timers to give you the ease of automatic operation.

Now that you are aware of your options, you are sure to find the solution that is right for you and that best express your style.
