The deck railing design you choose will have a surprisingly significant impact on the look and feel of your home. A deck rail is functional and it also provides security and safety. And it can also add a bit of depth and aesthetics to your deck.

You’ll probably be amazed at what a vast range of choices are available, even for something as simple as deck railings and balusters. Your choice of deck railing will depend on a number of factors:

Three Popular Ideas for Deck Railings

1. Natural Timber

If you have a traditional style home, particularly if it has timber cladding, you can’t go past natural timber for your deck rails.

There’s a huge range of shapes and designs to choose from, in the balusters or spindles, the post caps and the finials, from the plain and simple to the elegantly ornate.

The baluster design may be either vertical or horizontal. A timber lattice between the railings is also a popular idea, particularly if you need extra privacy or if you’d like to hide the view from your deck.

2. Metal Railings and Balusters

Aluminum or stainless steel deck rails have a sleek, shiny modern look, and come in a wide range of colors and finishes.

For a more rustic type of look, consider copper and brass deck railings and balusters.

Cast iron deck railings have a magnificently ornate look and feel, and add the perfect finishing touch to homes with an historical architectural design.

3. Glass Railings

If you have a view you’d like to see more of, and you want to give your home an elegant modern look, glass deck railings are a great idea.

Glass deck rails are generally made from durable transparent or tinted perspex. Perspex is a rugged, clear plastic that is similar to plexi-glass. It's available in a lot of different colors.
