A canvas awning makes a great looking addition to your home.

It’s no wonder canvas awnings are back in style. A canvas awning not only adds a touch of color and texture to your home exterior, it also provides shelter from strong sunlight and heat, so you can enjoy your deck or patio all summer long. Canvas woven from natural or synthetic materials keeps you cool and comfortable because it allows gentle breezes to pass through, and the awnings come in a fantastic range of colors, patterns and textures.

There are awnings designed for a wide range of purposes, including sheltering large outdoor patios, terraces, decks and pool decks, or shading windows from the sun so the interior of your home stays cool. Awning fabrics last for years, and they also extend the life of your interior and exterior surfaces, furniture and furnishings by protecting them from fading.

How durable are canvas fabrics?

With proper care, the canvas fabric will last for many years. Most canvas fabrics are treated with an agent to make them water resistant, but they are not actually waterproof. If your awning is retractable, you should roll it up if you expect heavy rain, however don’t roll it up if the canvas has already become wet. You should reapply the water repellent treatment every year or so.

Synthetic canvas fabrics are generally highly resistant to mildew and rotting. Natural fabrics tend to be less durable, and require a little more care. Rinsing the awning with clear water once a month or so, and spot cleaning little stains like bird droppings and roof runoff will increase the fabric’s resistance to mildew, and keep it looking great. You should give the awning a thorough clean every two to three years, according to the advice given by the awning manufacturer.
