Copper Fire Pit—A Review of this Practical Addition to the Patio

The traditional copper fire pit or Turkish fire pit is a hammered copper brazier that sits low to the ground, usually on a wrought iron stand.

Copper, still used in the bottoms of high end pots and saucepans, is a metal that distributes heat evenly, which makes these types of fire pits ideal for cooking on or grilling as well as for warmth and atmosphere.

Copper fire pits today are practical and decorative patio accents that are perfect for outdoor entertaining.

The copper bowl ages to an attractive patina with repeated use, and because the unit is easily moveable, you can adjust the position of the firepit to suit the number of guests gathered around.

Sizes range from 24” to 36” in diameter.

Fuel

Fire pits with a copper bowl or pan can burn any type of solid fuel, including:

• Wood
• Charcoal
• Logs

If fitted with a gas log set, some fire pits can be modified for propane fuel, but check with the manufacturer or a gas fireplace retailer for more information.

Stands

Stands are made from wrought or cast iron and are typically 9” tall, but you can find some elevated models that raise the copper bowl up to 30 inches. If storage is a problem, or if you need portability, there are even models with folding legs.

Screens and Lids

The following lids and screens are available with most fire pit models:

• Copper fire pit lid: solid copper lid protects the fire pit when not in use
• Safety screen covers: wire mesh screen keep sparks contained
• Chiminea with spark screen: features a copper chiminea to direct sparks safely upwards and away from guests and surrounding objects
