Laying your own flagstone patio or natural stone patio is a relatively simple home improvement project, and the results are wonderful.

A natural stone or flagstone patio has a wonderful textured feel that a concrete, tile or brick patio just can’t match. Patios laid in natural stone or flagstone have an appealing organic kind of geometry which is very different to the structured, formal designs you would have in a brick patio or tile patio. Flagstone patios make the perfect addition to an elegant, contemporary style home and garden decor, and increase the value of your home way beyond the cost of building the patio itself.

Tips for building your flagstone or natural stone patio.

You don’t need to be a home improvement expert to lay your patio with flagstone or natural stone, but what you will need is a reasonable amount of muscle. Building a flagstone or natural stone patio is not a good project for anyone with a bad back. Make sure you have plenty of willing helpers to haul the flagstone pieces into place.

You can lay the flagstone or natural stone directly onto an existing concrete patio. In fact, this is preferable as it will help the new patio to remain flat and stable. The flagstone pieces will normally not be of a uniform thickness. Before you begin, you need to determine which flagstone is the thickest, and use that to dictate the height above the existing patio which all the other flagstones will need to be level with. The thickness of the mortar or sand underneath each flagstone in the patio will need to vary to keep the patio surface level.
