Designing Deck Rails: The Right Materials to Meet Your Needs

Decks are a great addition to any home. They can make it seem as if your home is actually bigger by adding outdoor floor space, and they also offer an outdoor venue from which to hold parties and other celebrations.

One of the most attractive parts of the deck is the railings attached to them. While the main purpose of a deck rail is to keep people from falling off, it is only natural that some element of design is added to them since they are the most visible part of the deck when viewed from afar, given their vertical position.

So when you are designing your deck don't forget about designing deck rails too.

Deck rails come in many forms and sizes. Most deck designs usually conform with the total design of the house. The most basic deck design is probably a simple wooden deck painted a certain neutral color, usually white. However, many deck rail designs are available.

In designing deck rails, some woodworkers and architects use designs derived from the design of columns most famous in classical design. Therefore, it isn't unusual to see Corinthian designed deck rails. In fact, most pillars will usually have the curving and fluting forms which are common amongst classic designs. That is not to say, though, that modern designs do not exist. However, function is the most important thing; therefore the material of the deck rail is of utmost importance.
