A quick guide to choosing deck lighting supply products.

Nowadays you can buy all the deck lighting supply products you need online, so designing your own deck lighting system has never been easier. You will find loads of information on this web site on designing and installing deck lighting.

Your application will determine what kind of lighting you need. This site also has a few links to quality suppliers for your outdoor lighting products. I hope the information on this site will help you design and implement the appropriate lighting for your outdoor needs.

You’ll find a huge range of deck lighting supplies and fixtures, each designed to suit a specific lighting purpose, including:

Down lights and spotlights, to highlight a small, specific area of the deck.

Floodlights, to throw a strong wash of light over a large area of the deck.

Recessed lighting, which is designed to be mounted into the surface of the deck to highlight level changes, stairs and the deck edge.

Deck railing lights, for highlighting the railing posts.

Decorative accent lights, which can be used to draw attention to an attractive feature of the deck, or the lighting fixture may be a decorative feature in itself.

Deck lighting design tips.

1. Avoid creating glare or harsh hot spots.

This is probably the number one rule in deck lighting design, so if you have this covered, you’re already halfway there.

Make sure you don’t have a strong light shining directly onto a hard surface like a wall or the deck surface, as this will create a harsh light which is uncomfortable to look at.

Be careful not to create ‘hot spots’, where the light from two or more sources overlaps.

Aim to create an even wash of light over the deck area, with highlights and lighting accents where appropriate.

2. Think about safety.

Make sure stairways, steps, level changes, the edge of the deck, doorways and any other potential hazards are well lit. Lighting the deck railing is also a great safety feature, and it creates a magical look.

3. Experiment with your lighting design.

Most outdoor lighting supply products are very easy to set up, and they work on a low voltage system so they’re very safe to play around with. It’s a good idea to set up your deck lighting system temporarily and turn it on to see how well it works. You can then make any adjustments before you install the lights permanently.
